2024 Taiwan Elections: Acknowledging Taiwan's democratic and peaceful civic participation, and the need to continue to promote human rights legislation and monitor the implementation of human rights after the election

On the evening of 13 January 2024, the results of Taiwan's presidential and legislative elections were announced. Amnesty International congratulates Taiwan for, once again, holding a democratic and peaceful elections and congratulates Lai Ching-te and Hsiao Bi-khim being elected the next President and Vice President.

E-ling Chiu, National Director of Amnesty International Taiwan, said: "Despite under China’s continuous harassments and threats, Taiwan's general elections were held in a peaceful manner, once again, demonstrating Taiwan’s democracy. Compared to the 2020 elections, the turnouts for president and regional legislators surpassed 70%, demonstrating the level of concern and participation of the Taiwanese people in public policy."

"We have observed that the Chinese government continued to disturb Taiwan’s airspace and create tension in the Taiwan Strait during the campaign period and prior to the elections by sending military jets, sailing navy vessels and flying balloons, as well as, launching a satellite through the airspace of Taiwan. We call on China to respect the results of Taiwan's presidential and legislative elections and to cease its inappropriate military actions, harassment and intimidation against Taiwan."

"In the pre-election questionnaire we sent to the presidential candidates of the three main political parties, all responded positively for human rights in the areas of freedom of assembly and protest, refugee and asylum scheme, migrant workers' rights, digital responsibilities of online platforms, and climate justice. We expect that both the ruling party and the opposition party will continue to promote human rights legislation and monitor the implementation of human rights after the elections. We also urge the new government to continue to play the role of promoting human rights at both regional and international level."

"On the composition of the new Parliament, no party will hold the majority which means that it is necessary for the political parties to work hand in hand. We look forward that all parties will respond to the demands and calls from civil society. We are glad to see an increased number of young people and more pro-rights candidates advocating for human rights through participating in the legislative election. We urge the newly elected members of the Legislative Yuan to refine Taiwan's laws and regulations on the protection of human rights to meet the international human rights standards."
