Amnesty International Taiwan is seeking an individual passionate about human rights for a Director position to lead the organization. He/ she will be responsible to expand the human rights work and growth in membership and activism, to consolidate and build the office systems and procedures, as well as to enhance the AIT's overall standing in Taiwan.
We are looking for a dynamic, committed and highly-skilled professional who can represent the organization nationally and internationally. The Director will work closely with the International Secretariat offices in the Asia Pacific region and in London and reports to the Board of AIT. The candidate must have strong skills in each of the criteria (see Key Responsibilities) required for the post. EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR’S JOB DESCRIPTION
Job Title: Director
Location: Amnesty International Taiwan
Overall Purpose of the Job:
To provide professional leadership in developing AIT's strategic plan (to be approved by AIT Board) and develop and implement annual operational plan of the organization, to manage AIT's staff, human rights programs, growth and budget, and act as the spokesperson of AIT, nationally and internationally.
Key Relationships:
o Board of AIT
o Partner organizations in Taiwan and Asia Pacific
o Amnesty International’s sections (Asia Pacific in particular)
o Amnesty International’s International Secretariat (Headquarters in London and Asia Pacific Regional Hub in Hong Kong)
Key Responsibilities:
Strategic and Operational Plans
o Provide professional lead in developing the Strategic Plan of AIT [in collaboration with the Board of AIT, local partners, Amnesty International teams (London Headquarters and Asia Pacific Regional Hub in Hong Kong)].
o Prepare operational plan and ensure AIT’s Strategic and Operational Plans maintain a balance between local and regional (Asia Pacific) human rights situations and alignment with Amnesty International’s global priorities.
o Implement Operational Plans in consultation with partners (Taiwan and Asia Pacific region) and in collaboration with Amnesty International’s International Secretariat teams (Headquarters in London and Asia Pacific Regional Hub in Hong Kong).
Management
o Manage the staff of AIT, including recruitment, regular supervision, annual objectives setting and performance appraisals.
o Coordinate with the Board with regard to compliance with the AIT Statute and Taiwanese laws.
o Ensure that there is an effective and well-equipped National Secretariat, with a centralized membership management system capable of mobilizing activism and resources to further Amnesty International’s human rights goals in Taiwan, the wider region and internationally.
o Have overall responsibility for the fabric and condition of the office environment, including all equipment.
Campaigning
o Oversee implementation of all national and international campaigning engagements of AIT.
o Ensure the mobilization of activism and resources to enable members, groups and activists to fulfill the strategic objectives of AIT.
Media and Representation
o Act as the key spokesperson of AIT.
o Regularly deal with the print and other media as required.
o Represent Amnesty International within Taiwan and internationally as needed.
o Coordinate advocacy and lobbying work, including building relationships with partner organisations, the media and government.
Membership and Activism
o Ensure the growth of AI Taiwan through attracting, effective servicing and retaining new members, supporters and activists.
o Ensure the development of effective and dynamic activism and communication tools.
o Ensure the management of enquiries and complaints by members and activists.
o Ensure the development and regular distribution of Amnesty International materials.
o Develop and implement membership recruitment strategies as approved by the Board of AIT.
Fundraising
o Develop and implement a national fundraising strategy for AIT.
o Draft and submit funding proposals.
Financial Management
o Manage the budget of AIT and identify funding needs.
o Take overall responsibility for the administration of AIT’s bank accounts.
o Ensure good financial management practices are adhered to, as required by Taiwanese law.
o Ensure the periodic auditing of the accounts, as required by Taiwanese law.
o Ensure the production of regular financial reporting to the Board.
REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS
• Minimum a Bachelor’s Degree in any field or discipline and preferably with Human Rights, Law, Social Science, Political Science background, an advanced degree is highly desirable.
• At least 5 years of experience at senior management level in a similar environment will be added advantage.
• Sound knowledge of Taiwan’s human rights environment (legal system, national, regional and international human rights system), as well as its political, economic, and social structure.
• Proven management, leadership and organizational skills to manage a diverse, multi-cultural team.
• Demonstrated strong skills in strategic planning, campaigning and fundraising. Applicant should have at least executed/managed one major non-profit initiative from the inception through execution and completion
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, ability to establish partnerships with other organizations, and the ability to represent the AIT in a wide gambit of situations.
• Self-disciplined and motivated individual, who is willing to work as a team as well as to lead a global team.
• Be able to travel frequently, both within and outside the Taiwan.
• Fluency in English, Mandarin and Taiwanese are required.
